Reality Bites Was a Style Manual and Nobody Realized Until 2024

In the summer of 1994, Winona Ryder slouched onto movie screens wearing a thrifted slip dress, a moth-eaten boyfriend cardigan, and a pair of scuffed black combat boots. She played Lelaina Pierce, a depressed Gen X video journalist documenting her aimless Houston friend group in Reality Bites. The movie was a modest hit. The fashion industry mostly ignored it. Critics called Lelaina whiny. Parents called the whole crowd lazy. Thirty years later, scroll through any TikTok grunge revival tag and you will find Gen Z teenagers carefully reconstructing Lelaina Pierce without even knowing her name. The slip dress. The boots. The plaid. The cigarette dangling off the lip. It is all back, and Winona Ryder wore it first.

Patient Zero in a Slip Dress

Plenty of names get credit for the 2020s grunge resurgence. Marc Jacobs and his blacklisted 1993 Perry Ellis collection. Kurt Cobain’s olive cardigan, which sold at auction for $334,000 in 2019. Courtney Love and her ripped slip-dress-and-tiara assault on femininity. All real, all influential. But the look that actually hit Main Street — the version that high school girls in Ohio could pull off without anyone asking if their parents knew — came from a movie character that almost no one under 25 has actually seen all the way through.

Lelaina Pierce was, in retrospect, a costume design miracle. Her stylist, Susan Lyall, raided Hollywood vintage shops, thrift stores, and the actual back of Winona’s own closet. The point was not to dress Winona like a star. The point was to dress her like a 23-year-old who graduated valedictorian, lost her bookstore job, and now wore the same five things on rotation because rent ate everything else. Three decades on, that is the exact mood Gen Z is chasing on Depop and Vinted at three in the morning.

The Slip Dress and Combat Boot Equation

The slip dress was the bombshell move. Calvin Klein had been quietly turning lingerie into outerwear since the late 80s, but Reality Bites took it down a peg. Lelaina’s slips were not Kate Moss silk. They were rayon. They were a size too big. They looked like something her older sister forgot at a sleepover. She wore them with sneakers, with cardigans, and most famously with chunky black boots that made the whole outfit look like an accident.

Fast forward to 2023 and 2024 runways. Miu Miu, Diesel, The Row, and Coperni all sent slip dresses down the catwalk paired with brutalist footwear. Bella Hadid wore a near-identical Lelaina look to a New York dinner in late 2023 — slip, boots, oversized leather jacket — and the photo went around the internet for a week. Hailey Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sydney Sweeney have all cycled through the same formula. Slip plus boot equals 1994. That is not nostalgia. That is plagiarism with a really good rebrand.

The Babydoll Dress That Refused to Die

Lelaina’s other signature was the babydoll dress. Tiny floral print. Empire waist. Hits mid-thigh. Looks like something you would wear to play in the sandbox if you were five and slightly demonic. Courtney Love wore the same silhouette with bleached hair and smeared lipstick and called it kinderwhore. Lelaina wore it with a button-down underneath and called it Tuesday.

The babydoll vanished in the early 2000s when low-rise jeans steamrolled everything in their path. It came back hard in 2022 thanks to brands like Sandy Liang, Reformation, and the entire House of Sunny aesthetic. Then Euphoria’s costume team put Maddy and Cassie in tiny floral dresses with combat boots and the deal was sealed. Walk into a Brandy Melville or an Urban Outfitters today and the rack is full of dresses that would look completely at home on Lelaina Pierce sitting on a roof in Houston smoking a Marlboro.

That Cardigan Belonged to Someone’s Ex-Boyfriend

If there is one piece of clothing that defines the Lelaina aesthetic more than anything else, it is the oversized cardigan. Always brown or olive or charcoal. Always at least two sizes too big. Always pilled at the cuffs. The cardigan said: I borrowed this from someone I might still be sleeping with, and I have not done laundry in eleven days.

This was Kurt Cobain’s look too, of course. The famous unplugged cardigan that fetched a third of a million dollars at auction lives in the exact same emotional zip code. But Lelaina got there in cinemas months before MTV aired Unplugged in New York, and she wore the look without it being a statement. That is the difference between fashion and clothes, and Gen Z, who grew up on Depop and live their whole social lives through aesthetic mood boards, knows the difference perfectly. The 2024 oversized cardigan revival, championed by everyone from Chemena Kamali at Chloe to the Olsen twins at The Row, is the exact same garment Lelaina threw on over her dress before her bookstore shift.

How TikTok Found Lelaina Pierce in 2023

The Lelaina renaissance did not happen in fashion week. It happened on a phone. Around late 2022, a small group of Gen Z fashion creators on TikTok began posting outfit-of-the-day videos with captions like “Lelaina Pierce coded” or “if Reality Bites was on Netflix in 2024.” Most of these creators were not even born when the movie came out. They had picked the look up from Pinterest mood boards, from Tumblr archives, from their cool aunts’ yearbook photos.

The hashtag #realitybitesaesthetic now has tens of millions of views. The film itself, which had been quietly streaming on Pluto and Tubi, suddenly jumped to Peacock’s most-watched 90s catalog in early 2024 thanks entirely to teenagers who wanted to see the source material for the outfits they had been recreating all winter. Etsy searches for “vintage babydoll dress floral 90s” tripled between 2022 and 2024. Depop’s data team confirmed that searches for slip dresses peaked in March 2024, the exact month Reality Bites turned thirty.

Why the Runways Keep Coming Back to 1994

Designers love a clean reference. 1994 is irresistible because the look was already accidental. The whole point of grunge as Lelaina wore it was that none of it matched, none of it cost much, and none of it tried. That is a billion-dollar gold mine for a fashion industry trying to convince Gen Z that buying new clothes is still cool in the age of climate anxiety.

Look at the spring 2024 collections in this order: Miu Miu shredded miniskirts over thermal henleys. Coach paired baby-doll dresses with chunky leather work boots. Diesel sent down sheer slip dresses with raw hems. Alaia, under Pieter Mulier, draped slips like religious garments. Saint Laurent did a whole show that was essentially Lelaina Pierce after a sleepless flight to Paris. None of these designers cite Reality Bites by name. None of them have to. Every stylist between 35 and 50 was raised on this movie. It is genetic memory at this point.

The Real Lesson of Lelaina Pierce

Gen X spent the 1990s being told they were lazy, cynical, and stylistically bankrupt. Lelaina Pierce was the poster child for that whole disappointed thesis. Now her wardrobe is on every runway, in every TikTok feed, in every Gen Z closet from Brooklyn to Berlin. The thrifted slip dress your older sister wore in 1994 is now a $390 Reformation item. The boots your boyfriend chipped a tooth on in the mosh pit are a Vetements collab. The cardigan you stole and never gave back is a Chloe look-book centerpiece.

Lelaina Pierce did not predict the future. She just lived it for a hundred and one minutes in 1994 and walked off screen. The future, it turns out, was waiting around the corner the whole time, scrolling through Depop at 2 a.m. and dreaming about being her.
